I first heard of the conflicted heart in the book The Red Tent. It’s a chick book, it wasn’t what I thought it was about when I brought it. That said I am glad I read it as it definitely allowed me a little more perspective into how girls think, I think… (which can be with their heart as much as their mind)

Anyway I admit I kind or marveled over the concept of a ‘conflicted heart.’ Marveled because it describes so well some of my closest girl friends. Its that thing inside them that I just cannot quite put my finger on that I used to think was the monster living in the depths of river of souls. Instead I now think it’s a conflicted heart.

You see it in a mother when she is trying to let her son go off and live the great adventure of life, somewhere in her he is still just her little boy. You see it in girl whom seems to fall in love with more than one guy. Specifically, these days more than ever I think, you see it in the hearts of the girl who just doesn’t seem to fall in love.

But then I read a story called ‘Blood of the Lamb’ in which the author did an incredible job of painted the picture of a man with a conflicted heart. I then began to perceive the depth of conflict that can actually happen to a man as relates to his family, his friends, his vocation, his belief system and his sense of justice.

While I highly doubt that has changed much over the 1,000’s of years of modern man I will say my awareness of it at the very least troubles. Is it a good thing to have a conflicted heart or just a natural part of our existence?
