Today is fathers day in the US. The problem with fathers day (from the very selfish POV) is that it messes up my Sunday morning schedule. Instead of everyone being at home early on a Sunday morning when I go work out then go eat everyone is my breakfast joint (Jerry's Deli this particular morning) having breakfast with his or her father that one time in a year.

Instead of the silence I love on Sunday morning to reflect on life, I am listening both astounded and amused to the conversations going on around me. To my right two older guys sitting at the bar (no I was not drinking I was having coffee – something to do with it repairing my liver) complaining about not hearing from their kids. To my left was father and son talking about their ex wives and new girlfriends and father saying to his son “well you know you will always be my son and I will always love you” (while the son cringes).

Then when they left an older couple and their friend came and sat down (his Vodka & Tomato juice did look appealing) and started talking about dancing at gay bars. Then their friend came along and apparently they were there to meet some other people and their ex son-in-law’s, sisters ex something-err-rather was going to be there to whom they trying to set this other older lady up with.

Further to left was a middle aged man who was so drunk (11am) he had to use two hands on his wine glass to take a slurp and each time about as much went all over his face as in his mouth. Followed of course by the dramatic pushing away of the glass and burying his head in hands because life is so tough and repeat…

A few points on all this:

Dad’s whom have kids who don’t call them – what did you do that made the kids not want to call you? How about taking a little bit of responsibility here. Its so friggen hard for parents to tell their kids they love them, I don’t know why it just seems to be that way. What great wound is this that you that you cannot reach out to your kids?

The flip side to this is those parents who say to their kids “I love you” but what it really means is “why don’t you seem to love me?” My parents are like that, it doesn’t matter how much I call, write, fly down there fly them up here its never enough. There is always the condescending we have not heard from you, or from my mother “well I am your mother I have a right…” Or “you’re my son I am allowed to be worried about you”. My theory on that one is what on earth-good does worrying about me do for me or for her? That’s a pure waste of effort if ever I saw one. People should just drop all such things and enjoy the time they do have together.

Next - old couples should not be dancing in gay bars – enough said.

Next – old couple trying to set up older lady an ex’s something ex – avoid the drama. We don’t need any more Jerry Springer fodder, or Dr Phil showcases. There is no good end to that – get your shit together enjoy what you have don’t add more shit to it.

Finally, yo drunk guy – I feel your pain, but I hear drinking coffee in the morning is a smarter move...
